Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

My mum keeps suggesting I give my baby formula milk as it never harmed me. I'm keen to breastfeed though. What should I do?

First of all, well done on making the decision to breastfeed your baby. Having made the decision to breastfeed, you need to explain the reasons for your choice to your mum. Let her know that it’s important she supports you in your decision. Just having support and encouragement from your mum is a wonderful thing. It's unlikely that everyone you know will be 100 per cent behind your decision to breastfeed – some people may even wonder if it's the best thing to do. 20 or 30 years ago, most mums bottle fed their babies so it is not surprising that she may be giving you this advice. Explaining to your mum all the benefits that breastfeeding has for both you and your baby may be the first step. There are many ways your mum could help you to breastfeed, and one of the ways is to encourage you to keep going. The longer you breastfeed for, the more benefits it will bring to both you and your baby.
