Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Will breastfeeding stop me getting pregnant?

Some people believe they can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding. The truth is that you can only rely on breastfeeding as a contraceptive in very controlled and specific circumstances. For example, it’s only suitable for women who are exclusively breastfeeding – often and including during the night – and who never give bottles or any solid food at all. Also, periods should not have returned and the baby must be under six months old. If you want to use this method of contraception, which is known as lactational amenorrhoea, talk to a family counsellor or doctor first. Even using this method properly is no guarantee against pregnancy.
