Mums

Once you decide to breastfeed your baby, you’ll need lots of help around you. Don’t be afraid to call on your partner, your mum, your family and friends, and even your neighbours.

Tell everyone why it’s important for you to breastfeed – everyone around you will want the best for you both. By asking for their support and showing them how they can help you’re giving them ways to feel involved.

Here are a few ways in which your family and friends can help:

  • giving a hand around the house
  • preparing a meal
  • spending time with older children
  • keeping you company while you’re breastfeeding.

Don’t forget that everyone will want to spend some ‘me time’ with the baby too. This gives you the perfect excuse for a well-earned rest while someone else spends time with the baby.

Changing nappies, bathing, reading books, playing with toys and walks with the pram are all great ways to allow other people to develop a special relationship with the baby.

Remember, when giving family and friends their bonding time, stay out of their way so they can feel relaxed and learn to be confident with the baby.
